AFL Goldfields launches Coaches Shed

AFL Goldfields will launch its first ever Coaches Shed event with special guest Chris Anstey on May 31,2019.

AFL Goldfields started the initiative as a way of supporting local football coaches from around the region who deal with more than just the on field demands of coaching.

The Coaches Shed is based on the Men’s Shed concept of coming together as an outlet for coaches in an informal setting.

Coaches will gather and enjoy food, drinks and coffee while they share coaching experiences.

The program is about those little issues that only fellow coaches know - not about sharing tactical knowledge.

Chris Anstey is a welcomed addition to what AFL Goldfields hope to be a successful program.

Anstey has been involved in sport at the elite level as both a player and a coach.

Anstey is a former professional basketball whose career included stints in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Russia, Spain and where he was more well known, Australia.

He played a pivotal role in the success of the Melbourne Tigers before retiring at the end of the 2009–10 season and later became the team's head coach in 2012.

Anstey represented Australia at two Olympic Games and will bring a wealth of experience to the “Coaches Shed” program.

Program Coordinator and AFL Goldfields Football Development Manager Gary Learmonth said it was an exciting prospect to be joined by such an iconic Australian sportsman in the first session.

“We are hoping by having someone of the calibre of Chris Anstey attending the first session it will really help kick start this program and get a lot of coaches in the door,” Learmonth said.

The program is free for any registered coach from AFL Goldfields, but is open to all AFL accredited coaches.

Cost for coaches outside AFL Goldfields is $10.
